Intel Haswell and Broadwell Reboot Issue Cause Identified

Intel provides reboot issue guidance

Regular computer users don't have a lot to worry about, but operations managers at cloud companies and data centers have done little else in 2018 but worry about these security issues and the performance impact of the patches created to mitigate those issues.

All last week, users reported computers spontaneously rebooting after installing Intel's Spectre/Meltdown patch.

There have been numerous reports of issues with the various patches issued by vendors, including Intel. Much will depend on how the performance penalties and other questions shake out across AMD and Intel platforms as patches and updates continue to roll out.

More than six months after Google informed Intel that almost all the computers on the planet released in the last 20 years have security holes thanks to a chip design flaw, Intel seems no closer to completely addressing the Meltdown and Spectre issues than it did when it first went public with the news in early January.

Novak Djokovic has called for another significant change to the ATP Tour
He said: "It was a straight sets win but nearly two and a half hours, it wasn't that easy, I had to earn all of my points". Sharapova, a five-time Grand Slam victor , was unstoppable in racing through the first set before a battle in the second.

Just days after revealing that the reboot problem affecting Spectre/Meltdown-patched systems is more widespread than initially thought, Intel on Monday advised users to stop deploying its buggy fixes.

The company published a full list of Intel-based platforms that are impacted by this problem, and it's quite long. It claims to have found the root cause of the issue in Haswell (4th-generation) and Broadwell (5th-generation) chips but didn't name older or newer processor families, like Ivy Bridge, Skylake, Kaby Lake, and Coffee Lake.

In addition to the firmware update releases by chip vendors, operating system vendors have released updates for the Meltdown and Spectre attack methods. In a blog post published today, the company's executive vice president, Neil Shenoy, warned users of technical issues, urging them to hold off on downloading the fix until it can patch its patch. Shenoy apologizes further. He then states that they are working "around the clock" to ensure the final fix gets out as soon.
