While there was no official response from the president, Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders branded senate Democrats as "obstructionist losers, not legislators" in a statement released minutes before the shutdown came into effect. Trump reportedly called the New York Democrat and invited him personally. The measure failed in a final procedural vote that was still open in the Senate early Saturday morning. "But as of tonight, due to a completely avoidable government shutdown, they'll stand their post without pay". Essential services will still run. "Shutdown coming? We need more Republican victories in 2018!" And it's true that Democrats see a political opportunity in the wake of the president's alleged comments at a White House immigration meeting last week.

This impasse follows a months-long struggle in Congress to agree on government funding levels and protections for Dreamers, most of whom are originally from Mexico or Central America.

The Senate's top Democrat met Friday with President Donald Trump in an eleventh-hour bid to fund the government as a midnight deadline rapidly approached.

Their legal status, which these young people were granted by former United States president Barack Obama, expires on March 5, the date from which their deportations could begin.

President Trump blamed Democratic lawmakers for a government shutdown Saturday, accusing them of "holding our Military hostage" over their demand that a short-term spending bill include protection for illegal immigrants brought to the country as children.

Tax plan is a scam
In the Oval Office, he contended anew that Democrats "don't like tax cuts, they want to raise your taxes". We all know about the massive tax overhaul Congress passed this week.

What Democrats Say: Republicans control the House, the Senate and the White House.

"They're in charge", Schumer said yesterday as he entered his Capitol office.

"It's nearly as if you were rooting for a shutdown", Schumer said from the Senate floor. "When Democrats start paying our armed forces and first responders, we will reopen negotiations on immigration reform".

Although past government shutdowns have done little lasting damage to the USA economy, they can rattle financial markets and undermine the United States' reputation overseas.

Democrats say the problem lies, in a big way, with the president's flip-flopping on key issues. Trump rescinded an executive order allowing them to stay in the country and gave Congress until March 5 to pass legislation.
