CES 2018: Tech's biggest show disrupted by blackout

A major power outage at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2018 in Las Vegas on Wednesday (10 January), left the world's largest annual consumer tech trade show in the dark for almost two hours. Sony, Samsung, Intel, Qualcomm and LG are among the companies with bigger booths in the convention center's Central Hall, the area that was most affected and evacuated during the blackout. Power was restored to the convention center after two hours.

The 2018 Consumer Electronics Show was supposed to be that event where all the latest gadgets and gizmos are showed off by various companies.

It is the biggest consumer technology show in the world - but not even CES is immune to technical problems. We will continue to limit access to the LVCC until full power has been restored.

In fact, it was raining so hard that Google had to shut down its giant playground-ish booth for a whole day, which was located outdoors.

Public service announcements played over an intercom thanking attendees for their patience while the work to resolve the issue continued.

Kim Kardashian flaunts grill for first time since robbery
An insider previously revealed: 'The surrogate's comfort and safety is incredibly important to [Kim and Kanye]'. The couple are expecting the baby via a surrogate and it's thought that the little girl could arrive "any day".

As one would expect at an event filled with tech enthusiasts, plenty of pictures and videos of the eerily darkened scene hit Twitter during the outage, with the hashtag #CESBlackout quickly becoming a top trending topic. Both large and smaller ones rely on the annual trade show to ink deals that will translate to cash months in the future; the blackout disrupted some of the product demos, panels and meetings key to those deals.

Most are taking the disruption in stride-at least on social media.

CES is now in its 51st year.

What happens to all those internet-connected refrigerators, robots and other devices when the power goes out?
