E. coli Outbreak Update – 24 sick, 9 hospitalized, 2 with HUS, 1 dead in 15 states

DeLauro pushes CDC director for answers on E. coli outbreak

Nine of those people have been hospitalized, two of whom are suffering from a form of kidney failure.

The CDC continues to interview sick people in the United States to determine what they ate in the week before their illness started. Consumer Reports recommended that consumers avoid romaine lettuce until the outbreak cause was determined.

In the US, the FDA, which had not posted any public information about the outbreak until today, is assisting the CDC, but has virtually nothing to report.

Pressure had been mounting on the CDC and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to provide more information to the public about this outbreak.

There's new information on the deadly E. coli outbreak that News 10 has been tracking that could be linked to romaine lettuce.

Federal health officials reported seven additional cases of E. coli illness Wednesday in a deadly E. coli outbreak that has now struck 15 USA states. Most people recover from the illness in five to seven days but some develop a severe illness called hemolytic uremic syndrome, which can be fatal. Because CDC has not identified a specific type of leafy greens linked to the USA infections, and because of the short shelf life of leafy greens, CDC is not recommending that US residents avoid any particular food at this time. However, the CDC noted that people who got sick during this outbreak "were not more likely than healthy people to have eaten romaine lettuce".

The Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC) issued its first announcement about an E coli outbreak linked to romaine lettuce on December 11.

He said the illness onsets "occurred in late Nov & early Dec, so the source of these cases likely is no longer on the market". The information about this outbreak has not been updated by government officials since December 28, 2017. However, in the United States, state and federal agencies stopped short of making that declaration, stating that the investigation is ongoing.

The CDC says the likely source of the outbreak in the US appears to be leafy greens, but officials have not specifically identified a type of greens eaten by people who became ill. "For instance, if the equipment at a processing plant is contaminated with E. coli O157:H7, new product could become a source of further infections". Finally, avoid preparing food when you are sick, particularly if you are sick with diarrhea. There has been one death in California, which was previously reported as connected to the outbreak. If you are concerned that you have an E. coli infection, talk to your healthcare provider. Those most at risk for E. coli illness include the very young, very old and individuals with compromised immune systems.

For the record, symptoms of E. coli begin two to eight days after consuming the bacteria, notes CNN.
