CES 2018: Kia Unveils Niro EV Concept With 383 Km Range

As you can tell most of the interactions with the car's system are done via touchscreen, although you can even "login" to the vehicle using face and voice recognition.

At CES, Kia also showed off the Niro EV Concept, said to be next-step in the brand's journey towards electrification. Designers also installed new headlights, a sportier front bumper, and a redesigned rear end with "clean and sharp trailing edges allowing air to flow more easily off the back of the vehicle". This goal includes a new fuel cell vehicle that Kia plans to launch in 2020.

Kia also made it clear that it's getting serious about electrified vehicles.

Should the system detect a pedestrian or cyclist crossing in front of the vehicle, the speakers sound an alert targeted specifically at that person, warning them of the car's presence. The fully electric SUV is based on the standard Niro, but features unique front and rear fascias.

The electric powertrain delivers power from a 64kWh battery pack to the 201bhp electric motor which is enough for a 238 mile range and a 115mile splash and dash in fifteen minutes charge. Kia says the current powertrain found here utilizes new production technology which will be applied to other near-future vehicles.

Kia managers have not given any specific plans to produce the Niro EV Concept, but did say they plan to have 16 electrified vehicles by 2025, including five new hybrid models, five battery-electric vehicles and a fuel-cell electric auto. There's also a safety system with cameras to detect pedestrians or cyclists and an external speaker to warn them if they don't hear the Niro EV approaching.

Aside from the Niro EV, Kia's "Beyond Autonomous Driving" exhibit at CES 2018 will showcase advanced technologies that reflect the direction that the automaker is taking with regard to autonomy and mobility.

On the self-driving front, Kia announced plans to begin Smart City autonomous vehicle testing in 2021.

Next up, connected auto technologies will be a staple in every vehicle segment, with the goal to make every single model a connected auto by 2030. "'Boundless for all' represents a future in which a vehicle can be so much more than the sum of its parts", said Dr. Woong-chul Yang, Vice Chairman and Head of Kia R&D Center.
