Nvidia Revs Up CES Consumer Tech Show With Autonomous Car News

At CES 2018, Nvidia launches Xavier, an effort to meld autonomous driving and AI

Two Xavier SoCs and two next-gen Nvidia GPUs are used for the new Pegasus AI computing platform announced late a year ago which Nvidia says is capable of powering Level 5 autonomous vehicles. "Nvidia is a key technology provider to Uber as we bring scalable self-driving cars and trucks to market". This week at CES the company announced that it's finally making Xavier, an AI chip made for self-driving vehicles that Nvidia announced in 2016, available to customers. "Hopefully we'll deliver the bus...it's a totally new platform [with] the hardware but the software and the components for autonomous driving".

The Xavier processor, dubbed by Nvidia as being "the most complex system on a chip ever created", is said to deliver 30 trillion operations per second from more than 9bn transistors - while only consuming 30 watts of power and fitting on a board smaller than a license plate.

The company just took the wraps off Drive Xavier: an incredibly powerful system-on-a-chip (SoC) meant to power the next generation of autonomous vehicles.

As one of the world's top automotive suppliers, Germany-based ZF brings expertise for system integration of the auto computer and the sensors.

Diess added, "Autonomous driving, zero-emission mobility and digital networking are virtually impossible without advances in AI and deep learning".

Pink to sing National Anthem at the Super Bowl 2018
We have no doubt that both Wailes and Pink will do an awesome job when the Super Bowl rolls around next month. Pink is heading to the Super Bowl to sing the USA national anthem.

Nvidia is pushing Drive IX as the ultimate SDK for vehicle safety and convenience. CEO Jensen Huang describes the Pegasus, powered by two of the company's powerful Drive Xavier chips, as a "Level 5 self-driving vehicle".

NVIDIA has previously teamed up with the likes of Tesla and China's Baidu.

The tech is used to help autonomous vehicles interpret the world and make decisions. The technology will enable so-called "intelligent co-pilot" capabilities based on processing sensor data inside and outside the vehicle.

The chipmaking firm has already developed a significant number of partnerships in order to push into the developing autonomous vehicle market, claiming that it is working with more than 320 other organisations, including Tesla.

Xavier was first teased a year ago but Nvidia says it now forms the basis of two software platforms - Drive IX and the just announced Drive AR - all of which are part of Nvidia's Pegasus AI computing platform.
