White House press secretary Sarah Sanders said that Pakistan can do more to fight terrorism

White House press secretary Sarah Sanders said that Pakistan can do more to fight terrorism

China came out forcefully in defence of Pakistan's anti-terrorism efforts after US President Donald Trump accused Islamabad of sheltering terrorists.

The summit comes as demonstrators took to the streets of Karachi to protest Trump and the U.S.

The frequency of suspected US drone attacks near the Pakistani-Afghan border has increased notably since Trump introduced his Afghanistan strategy in August.

On Monday, Trump said the USA had "foolishly" given Pakistan more than $33 billion in aid in the last 15 years and had gotten nothing in return but "lies & deceit".

"Pakistan has fought the war against terrorism primarily out of its own resources and at a great cost to its economy, and that even more importantly the huge sacrifices made by Pakistan", it said.

Trump had tweeted on Monday that Pakistan gives safe haven to terrorists while taking $33 billion in US aid-the latest salvo in the administration's threat to cut funding to Pakistan by $255 million as it reviews Islamabad's cooperation in the fight on terror. "They overlook cross-border safe havens of terrorists who murder Pakistanis", Pakistan's Ministry of Defense tweeted.

Thousands of US and coalition forces in Afghanistan still rely mostly on ground and air routes through neighboring Pakistan for receiving vital supplies.

They note that current tensions with Russian Federation and Iran leave the Trump administration with nearly no options but to rely on Pakistani supply routes to sustain the Afghan military mission.

Defense Minister Khurram Dastgir Khan echoed Asif's defiant tone during an interview on Thursday, vowing a "cold-blooded response" to Washington's stated intention to withhold $255 million in aid to Pakistan, as cited by RIA Novosti.

US officials have long accused Pakistan of allowing terror networks to operate within the country's borders.

A larger security-related payment was $14.5 billion paid to Pakistan from Coalition Support Funds (CSF), which the CRS paper argued, was not assistance but reimbursement for logistical and operational support of US-led military operations; "it is technically not foreign assistance".

We will respond to President Trump's tweet shortly inshallah. Will let the world know the truth.difference between facts & fiction.

The statement said "blaming allies certainly does not serve the shared objective of achieving lasting peace in Afghanistan and the region".

Washington has long accused Pakistan, especially its security institutions, of turning ignoring or covertly helping the Afghan Taliban and the Haqqani terrorist network to stage cross-border attacks against Afghan and US -led forces.

Pakistan "receives funds from the United States to fight against terrorists, but it has not destroyed terrorist safe havens from where terrorists continuously carry out attacks in Afghanistan", he told RFE/RL on January 1.

"Trump is not the first president to be frustrated by Pakistan. The global community should acknowledge that", Chinese foreign ministry spokesman Geng Shuang told reporters here on Tuesday.

On Tuesday, she had said the administration would in the "next 24 to 48 hours" present Pakistan with a list of "specific actions" it needed to take on combating terrorism to keep the aid flowing.

The news agency cited two congressional aides as saying the USA administration has been informing members of Congress that it will announce plans to cut off "security assistance" to Pakistan, although it was not clear how much or what type of assistance would be cut or for how long.

China is investing billions of dollars to help build a network of power plants, rail, road, and communications in Pakistan.
