Tree drop-off program will end January 15, but residents may still drop off trees after this date at the transfer station or landfill during normal operating hours.
The council said: "These sites are for realChristmas trees only".
The trees collected by the Public Works Department are ground up into mulch to be used by the Gateway Streetscape Foundation in flowerbeds throughout Martinsville and Henry County. Flocked trees will not be accepted.
Even though most Christmas tree farms are only left with a few trees after the busy Christmas season, what happens to these unsold cut Christmas trees? Many people still want Christmas greens after that point for a gift wreath, so any trees left standing get cut up for that goal.
Trees must be placed at least 3 feet away from garbage carts to guarantee collection of both the Christmas trees and the garbage carts.
To participate in the program, residents are asked to place their undecorated trees on the curb in front of their homes.
