Why Britain Chose Blue, Not Red, as Its Post-Brexit Passport Color
EU member states are not ordered to adopt the burgundy passports even though many choose to do so, as a result of a European council resolution from 1981 which recommends it.
British passports will ditch the standard burgundy European Union passport design and switch back to the country's "iconic" blue and gold coloring after Brexit, Immigration Minister Brandon Lewis said Friday.
Twitter user Joseph said: "Half of us don't remember passports being blue so in 20 years time will the Brits (if the United Kingdom still exists) revert back to maroon for us sentimental folk?"
"One of the most iconic things about being British is having a British passport", Immigration Minister Brandon Lewis said.
And five months later in October - when the current passport manufacturers' contract expires - all new British passports will be issued in the dark blue colour that was once famous across the globe.
Scottish first minister Nicola Sturgeon was another who tweeted that the episode risked further damaging UK's reputation on the world stage, denouncing the return of the navy blue passport as "insular, inward-looking, blue passport-obsessed nonsense".
Marc Pritchard said: "Does the Leader of the House share my concern that the new British passport from 2019, a black passport not a purple passport, could be designed and printed in Germany".
Papa John's founder John Schnatter steps down as company's CEO Papa John's customers can order through Facebook and Apple TV, but Ritchie said he wants the chain to be everywhere customers are. The company was forced to issue an apology after a neo-Nazi website dubbed Papa John's "the official pizza of the alt-right".
"But changing to blue would have looked odd, whereas now it doesn't look that odd", he added.
Mr Lewis said he felt the new design would help Britain "restore national identity". "The UK could have had any passport colour it wanted and stay in the European Union".
"The UK passport is an expression of our independence and sovereignty, symbolising our citizenship of a proud, great nation", she said in a tweet announcing the passport, which will also contain new security features to prevent forgery.
But Remain-supporting Conservative MP Anna Soubry was more sceptical.
Powell, who served as private secretary to Thatcher from 1983 to 1990, added: "If we get their agreement to full alignment with the single market in return, it's a good deal". "Not sure they'll make up for broken Leave promise of extra £350m a week for NHS".
As The Sun reports, three companies are now bidding for the contract to make the new blue passport - including a manufacturer based in Germany.
"Couldn't give a toss what colour my passport is", said actor Samuel West. "Care much more about losing the right to live and work in 26 countries".
