North Korea calls new United Nations sanctions an "act of war"

On Friday, the United Nations Security Council unanimously passed a resolution toughening sanctions against North Korea following its November 29 ballistic missile test.

The new restrictions are meant to slash North Korea's imports of refined petroleum products, further restrict shipping and impose a 12-month deadline for expatriate North Korean workers to be sent home.

The sanctions also order the repatriation of North Korean workers sent overseas to earn much needed revenue for Kim Jong-Un's regime.

"The United States, completely terrified at our accomplishment ... is getting more and more frenzied in the moves to impose the harshest-ever sanctions and pressure on our country", the statement said.

The foreign ministry said in a spokesman's statement that the sanctions resolution is a grave infringement upon its sovereignty and an act of war violating peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula and the region.

Trump's National Security Adviser H.R. McMaster said earlier this month that North Korea was the "greatest immediate threat to the U.S".

"We will further consolidate our self-defensive nuclear deterrence aimed at fundamentally eradicating the United States nuclear threats, blackmail and hostile moves by establishing the practical balance of force with the U.S.". The new resolution would also cap crude imports at current levels of about 4 million barrels annually.

The rogue state has warned that sanctions are hurting the North Korean people, a view echoed by certain American media outlets.

He also threatened that other countries that voted in favor of the sanctions can not avoid paying a "heavy price for what they have done". The UN's top envoy to North Korea, Jeffrey Feltman, said this month that he was "deeply worried" about the prospects of a diplomatic solution to the crisis after meeting officials in Pyongyang. The country is already subject to wide-reaching sanctions imposed by the worldwide community because of its nuclear ambitions.

North Korea on November 29 said it successfully tested a new ICBM that put the US mainland within range of its nuclear weapons.

Widely read Chinese state-run tabloid the Global Times said on Saturday that the tougher resolution was aimed at preventing war, and noted the USA had compromised with no indication the United Nations could grant the United States permission for military action. South Korea's foreign ministry said it is aware of the statement, highlighting its position that they are a "grave warning by the worldwide community that the region has no option but to immediately cease reckless provocations, and take the path of dialogue for denuclearisation and peace".

"That may be an assumption we can not make" with Mr Kim, he said.
