Ukrainian interpreter who visited May arrested on Russian spying charges

Ukraine's state security service SBU detained Yezhov 39 on suspicion of working in the interests of Russia Prime Minister Volodymyr Groysman said today

He said Mr Yezhov was "an official in the government's secretariat who was working in the interests of the enemy state [Russia] for a long time".

Earlier, the press office of the Security Council of Ukraine reported that Yezhov was allegedly recruited by the Russian intelligence during his two-year-long business trip to U.S.

Ukraine's state security service SBU detained Yezhov on suspicion of working in the interests of Russia, Prime Minister Volodymyr Groysman said today.

'The action that's been taken is a matter for the Ukrainian authorities'.

Yezhov's wife is a Russian citizen and he could have been blackmailed or pushed to work for Russia, he added, urging him to cooperate with the investigation. He was detained, ' Groysman said on Facebook.

'He was respected. And he responsibly and diligently worked for the Russian special services'.

He said North Korean hackers were still at work last week, and were shut down by a retaliatory response by the US and others. It also allows the U.S. to galvanise the private sector, he said, adding that in this case, the private sector also acted.

"Officers of the Security Council of Ukraine have recorded that the government official collected information on the activity of the government agencies with the help of special equipment at the request of his Russian patrons".

Mr Yezhov accompanied Ukrainian PM Volodymyr Groysman on a visit to London in July and was photographed with his boss and Mrs May in Number 10.

He also met then-US Vice President Joe Biden in 2016. "He passed received data to curators through electronic communication channels".

The revelation came as Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson travelled to Moscow for a meeting with Russian counterpart Sergey Lavrov with relations Russia and the West sinking to Cold War levels.

The Kremlin said it was aware of Yezhov's detention in Ukraine on charges of treason in favour of Russian Federation.

"We can neither confirm or deny the allegations against him".
