US Vetoes UN Call for Withdrawal of Trump Jerusalem Decision

Turkish FM to head to US for UN vote on Jerusalem

"It is one more example of the United Nations doing more harm than good in addressing the Israeli-Palestinian conflict", she said on the draft resolution that would have called upon all states to refrain from establishing diplomatic missions in Jerusalem.

The Palestinian envoy led a group of Arab ambassadors in a meeting with Miroslav Lajcak, the president of the General Assembly, to schedule a vote on the draft resolution, probably on Thursday.

Under a 1950 resolution, an emergency special session can be called for the General Assembly to consider a matter "with a view to making appropriate recommendations to members for collective measures" if the Security Council fails to act.

Since the decision, at least nine Palestinians have been killed and more than 1,900 injured in protests in the occupied territories of the West Bank, East Jerusalem and the Gaza Strip.

A spokesman for the Palestinian president, Mahmoud Abbas, responded to the veto by saying it was "unacceptable and threatens the stability of the worldwide community because it disrespects it".

"We will take political, diplomatic, and legal actions against Trump's declaration regarding Jerusalem", said Abbas.

The US was alone in voting against Monday's draft resolution at the Security Council, with the 14 other member countries voting in favour, including France and Britain, which are generally closely aligned with the US.

US Ambassador to the UN Nikki Haley called the outcome "an insult" and said "it won't be forgotten".

Trump abruptly reversed decades of United States policy this month when he recognised Jerusalem as Israel's capital, generating outrage from Palestinians and the Arab world and concern among Washington's western allies.

A series of Security Council resolutions, including Resolution 2334, made stipulations on the issue of Jerusalem. "The record will reflect that we did so proudly".

"The US bias to Israel, recognition of Jerusalem as capital of the Jewish state and transfer of the embassy from Tel Aviv to the occupied city are violating United Nations resolutions and the 1949 Fourth Geneva Convention", he said. He said that it was becoming more important to move "as quickly as possible towards direct Israeli-Palestinian negotiations" and reaffirmed Russia's summit proposal between the two warring factions, following President Vladimir Putin's visit to the region last week.

The rare use of the U.S. veto to block the vote was not an embarrassment, Haley said, but should embarrass the other council members.

Does the United States use its veto often? No.

"You lit a candle of truth".

And it would have called for intensified and accelerated global and regional efforts to achieve Middle East peace.

Netanyahu compared Haley to the Maccabees, Jewish warriors commemorated during the current Jewish holiday of Hannukkah for revolting against Hellenic rulers, rededicating the Jewish Temple in Jerusalem and establishing a Jewish Kingdom in Judea.

They warned that Mr. Trump's announcement about Jerusalem, which upended decades of American policy, threatened to subvert the effort to solve one of the world's most intractable conflicts.
