Google to drop support for AR focused Project Tango on March 1st

Google kills Project Tango AR project, as focus shifts to ARCore

Google's augmented reality (AR) platform - Project Tango - which was announced back in February 2014, is going to be shut down. "Thank you to our incredible community of developers who made such progress with Tango over the last three years". Although Tango has been around for years, it never reached mainstream adoption because using its 3D mapping technology required high-tech hardware made specifically to handle it. So, to help the developers to narrow down their development process, the company is focusing on a single project to offer much better support for the platform development. "We look forward to continuing the journey with you on ARCore", a Google spokeswoman told ZDNet.

"We're turning down support for Tango on March 1, 2018".

LG V30+ launched in India for Rs. 44990
On the front, the LG V30 + sports a somewhat mundane 5-megapixel wide-angle (90-degree lens) camera for selfies and video calling. In terms of specifications, the device features a 6-inch QHD+ OLED FullVision display along with a 1440x2880 pixels resolution.

Still, ARCore's software development kit is very similar to Tango's, so although the latter is getting sunsetted, it will live on its predecessor, albeit in a more versatile way. As this has an added advantage over the Tango and in the future, Google AR Core is expected to be a built-in feature on the Android ecosystem. ARCore does not need special sensors to function, and works with current smartphone hardware and cameras, with machine learning taking care of the workload for the most part. Also, when we talk about Project Tango, some of the names that come to our mind are Lenovo Phab2 Pro and ASUS ZenFone AR.

Google ARCore was rolled out in August, and the first consumer application was seen recently when the company released AR stickers themed around movie series Star Wars and Netflix-produced TV show Stranger Things. Apart from support for Tango, there wasn't much to these devices. " tweeted Google through Tango's official Twitter account".
