NY has been rocked by news of an explosion, believed to be a terror attack, at its main Manhattan bus terminal, which prompted a mass panic and stampede, according to reports.
Ullah is originally from Bangladesh and has been in the United States for seven years and has been living in Brooklyn.
Authorities, who cautioned the information was preliminary, said the suspect appears to have acted alone.
Ullah lived with his mother, sister and two brothers in Brooklyn and was a green card holder, said Shameem Ahsan, consul general of Bangladesh in NY. The suspect was badly hurt and was taken to Bellevue Hospital.
Ullah, 27, and five other people were injured Monday.
A law enforcement official familiar with the Ullah investigation said investigators have found evidence that he watched Islamic State propaganda on the internet. He told investigators that he made the explosive device at his place of work. The residents have also been advised to avoid the area. After the blast, hundreds of commuters fled subway trains and dozens of emergency vehicles swarmed Times Square.
New York Mayor Bill de Blasio's office says that he has been briefed about the incident, adding, "The NYPD, FDNY and first responders are on the scene". "Thank God, the perputrator did not achieve his ultimate goals, thank God the only injuries that we know at this point were minor".
Gov. Andrew Cuomo described Ullah as a disgruntled lone wolf. None of the other injuries were life-threatening.
A statement released Monday night by relatives said Ullah's family is heartbroken and deeply saddened by the suffering the attack has caused.
The person arrested had a pipe bomb strapped to him when it went off on a subway platform, a law enforcement official said.
"The PA system was still blaring Christmas carols", Sherlock said.
The statement was released on behalf of the family by Albert Fox Cahn, legal director for the Council on American-Islamic Relations in NY. Surveillance video, posted on social media, shows people walking through the crowded tunnel when a small explosion emits a plume of smoke.
