Google opens first machine learning research lab in Asia with 'Google AI China Center'
China's government is laser-focused on controlling everything that happens within the country, and that means strict rules for foreign companies attempting to operate there. However, that hasn't stopped Google announcing a new AI research center located in Beijing.
Google is opening an Artificial Intelligence (AI) research center in China to poach the local talent and push its presence further in a country where its products are still blocked. While this move is not as much a reversal of policy as something like bringing the Google Play Store to China, or even having Google.cn not automatically forward you to the Hong Kong variant, it is a clear sign that Google has not been blind to China's growth as a tech powerhouse.
Google's parent company Alphabet announced the plan in a blog post Wednesday.

Google cited China's growing academic and technical contributions to the AI field as one reason it chose to move forward on the project, and said that it's looking forward to "working closely with the vibrant Chinese AI research community". Cloud computing will be the way that most companies access AI and machine learning in the future. All three winning teams of the ImageNet Challenge in the past three years have been largely composed of Chinese researchers. "Whether a breakthrough occurs in Silicon Valley, Beijing or anywhere else, it has the potential to make everyone's life better for the entire world". According to Li, 43 percent of the content in the top 100 AI journals came from Chinese authors in 2015.
Unveiled today by Fei-Fei Li, Google Cloud's Chief Scientist, at the Google Developer Days event in Shanghai, it is the company's first lab in Asia. "And we want to work with the best AI talent, wherever that talent is, to achieve it".
