Harvey Weinstein releases statement about Salma Hayek's op-ed in The New York Times

In the end, she said that she hopes her voice joining in into the chorus of women speaking can make people understand why it's so hard for women to open up.

She said she repeatedly said no to the producer's sexual advances over a number of years, at "hotel after hotel, location after location, where he would show up unexpectedly". Hayek then adds: "Little did I know it would become my turn to say no".

Hayek's recollection of her history with Weinstein follows reports in The New York Times and The New Yorker in early October that detailed a pattern of sexual harassment and assault taking place over the course of decades.

"I did not care about the money; I was so excited to work with him and that company".

No to giving him a chance to watch me wash up.

"I ran into him at an event, he pulled me aside and told me he had stopped smoking and he had had a heart attack". No to letting him give me oral sex.

Once the filming began, Weinstein often berated the actress on set and "threatened to shut down the movie" as "the only thing I had going for me was my sex appeal and that there was none of that in this movie", Hayek wrote. "No to my getting naked with another woman".

On Wednesday, Salma Hayek became the latest woman to come forward with allegations of sexual harassment and bullying against producer Harvey Weinstein. Hayek's refusal to those advances would be met with Weinstein's "Machiavellian rage", she wrote, and at one time, he allegedly threatened her with death, saying, "I will kill you, don't think I can't". Weinstein's abuse began with lewd sexual demands and turned to violent threats, Hayek says.

The sex scene deeply troubled Hayek, she wrote, describing having to take a tranquilizer to stop "crying and convulsing" as she performed the scene. She said, "This was not sexy, but it was the only way I could get through the scene".

"When so many women came forward to describe what Harvey had done to them, I had to confront my cowardice and humbly accept that my story, as important as it was to me, was nothing but a drop in an ocean of sorrow and confusion", she wrote.

Hayek concluded by saying she hoped adding her voice to the chorus would, "shed light on why it is so hard, and why so many of us have waited so long".

Weinstein then wanted to dump the movie into one theater in NY, later acquiescing to Hayek and director Julie Taymor's request to open the film in Los Angeles as well. "How could I let their magnificent work go to waste?" she added.

"Until there is equality in our industry, with men and women having the same value in every aspect of it, our community will continue to be a fertile ground for predators", Hayek concluded.

Mr. Weinstein does not recall pressuring Salma to do a gratuitous sex scene with a female costar and he was not there for the filming. It's a sobering thought, and even more sobering when you consider how many women have accused Weinstein of rape, and the fact that Hayek may be right. "Men sexually harassed because they could". Today, Variety published a 20-name-long list of women in Hollywood accompanied by a brief descriptions of their experiences.
