M - For model-year 2018, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety strengthened its Top Safety Pick Plus award requirements - and just 15 vehicles qualified for the award during the agency's most recent round of testing.

Despite safer vehicles, there was a 5.6 percent uptick in USA auto crash deaths in 2016, the second consecutive year numbers were higher, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

"We've been doing small overlap frontal crash tests on the driver's side since 2012 and we've seen a lot of improvement on that side, but we weren't seeing that kind of improvement for passengers, said IIHS president Adrian Lund".

The Institute's headlight ratings also are relatively new, with the first ones being released in March 2016. The 2018 Subaru Impreza, Legacy, Outback and WRX models earned the institute's highest Top Safety Pick+ award when those models are equipped with Subaru's EyeSight driver assist technology and LED steering responsive headlights.

The institute said it devised a passenger-side small overlap front crash test because some manufacturers weren't paying enough attention to the issue. It's similar to the existing small front overlap test, a rigorous evaluation that crashes a vehicle into a barrier at 40 miles per hour with just 25 percent of the driver-side front end striking the obstacle.

Two automakers make up much of the list.

Rather than design elements, Lund said headlights should be treated as safety features to help avoid a crash at night.

The IIHS which conducts crash tests and evaluates automobile safety standards says it's pleased with how well manufacturers are making the grade.

Lund credits the increase to an improved economy that has more people on the roads and on distracted driving.

Leading the way for the most Top Safety awards are Hyundai and Subaru.
