The Angel of the North after last week's snowfall

Temperatures could rise by as few as six degrees for a partly sunny, 48-degree high Wednesday, according to the National Weather Service.

Beginning Tuesday and continuing through the foreseeable future, highs are going to remain in the 40s, with lows in the low- to mid-20s.

Cold arctic air will bring snow, hail and strong icy winds to the United Kingdom towards the end of the week, say weather forecasters.

"Thursday will be a bitterly cold day with fresh, gusty north to northwest breezes and afternoon temperatures of just 3 degrees Celsius to 6 Celsius".

By Friday morning, up to eight inches of snow has been forecast in the Scottish Highlands by STV weather presenter Sean Batty.

Spokeswoman Nicola Maxey told the Daily Express: 'It will turn cold from Friday as an Arctic Maritime air mass moves over the country. "From there on out it changes to a pattern more like winter with snow showers and high temperatures not even reaching freezing".

UK Weather: Arctic cold snap to bring snow and 60mph winds next week

Friday morning starts off with lingering cold rain showers along the coast and a slight risk of rain in the Pee Dee, a cold rain/winter mix in NC.

RAIN ARRIVES TUESDAY: Rain is a pretty much guarantee on Tuesday as a strong cold front enters the area. Some places could see more than two feet of snow, the weather service said.

The coldest night of 2017 so far was January 30 when Braemar, Aberdeenshire, fell as low as -10.1C (13.8F).

Upper level energy coming in from the west tomorrow will bring a cold rain to areas south of the Metro and will make for a winter-like day.

Office meteorologist Charles Powell also warned temperatures could drop even lower than last week as northerly gales blast the UK.

This evening, expect a continued chance for showers and possibly even a thunderstorm before midnight.
