LeClerc and Ericsson earn Sauber seats
It's believed that Ferrari had been pressing for another of their development drivers, Antonio Giovinazzi, to take the race seat.
Sauber announced earlier this week it would be racing as "Alfa Romeo Sauber" in 2018, heralding the return of the Alfa Romeo name to F1 after more than 30 years.
Charles Leclerc will make his Formula 1 debut next season after being confirmed alongside Marcus Ericsson in Sauber's line-up.
The vehicle is predominantly white with red accents, and large Alfa Romeo logos after the Swiss team confirmed a deal with the manufacturer.
Giovinazzi will stay as the team's back-up driver and it remains to be seen if Wehrlein moves to Williams - the only remaining team with a vacancy.
Sauber has unveiled its concept livery for the 2018 Formula 1 season, in the wake of its collaboration with FCA brand Alfa Romeo. He was speaking in Milan at an event marking the launch of Sauber's new partnership with Alfa Romeo. That was promptly followed by a deal with Ferrari for 2018.
