Special Counsel Robert Mueller fired a top FBI investigator from his team over the summer after learning that the agent sent potentially anti-Trump messages to a colleague, sources tell ABC News.
Strzok also worked on the FBI investigation a year ago into whether then-Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton mishandled classified information through her use of private email servers while Secretary of State.
In an apparent shift from his initial rationale for firing former National Security Adviser Michael Flynn, the President said Saturday that he "had" to fire him a month into his presidency because he not only lied to the Vice President, but also to the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
The White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Trump's tweet. The New York Timesreported Strozok exchanged messages with a colleague in reacting to news events in ways that could construed to be critical of Trump. While Mr. Trump can point to the court documents and say they show no evidence of collusion with Russian Federation, the special counsel's filings so far paint a damning portrait of Mr. Trump's associates.
In court, prosecutors detailed calls Flynn had made in late December 2016 to the senior Trump transition team at Mar-a-Lago to discuss conversations with then-Russian ambassador to the US, Sergey Kislyak.
Critics claimed on Saturday that President Trump inadvertently admitted to obstruction of justice as he tried to distance himself from his disgraced national security adviser Michael Flynn. Afterward, Comey said that Trump had asked him to drop the investigation into Flynn.
The president had previously maintained that he fired Flynn in February for lying to Pence. A variety of news reports say that the the transition official who told Flynn to contact other governments was Jared Kushner, a White House adviser and the president's son-in-law. Not only did a lengthy list of his own advisers make secret contact with Russian officials during the campaign, but his own family members did. "There's been absolutely no collusion, so we're very happy".
A few hours later, Mr. Strzok and his team were back in Mr. Comey's conference room for a final briefing: Only about 3,000 emails had been potentially work-related.
"It seems undeniable that Mueller is getting something big in exchange for going so soft on him", said Stephen Vladeck, a professor at the University of Texas Law School.
Trump was greeted in NY by protesters chanting "Lock him up", a reference to the "Lock her up" rallying cry used by both Trump and Flynn during the 2016 campaign. The White House has denied that the conversation occurred as Comey described.
Flu season could be bad this year, experts warn
Health officials say the deaths of two people due to influenza are the first flu-related deaths in Oklahoma this season. Some people never show any signs of flu symptoms and may act as carriers of the virus, infecting their loved ones.
