Microsoft announces major expansion at Redmond campus

Microsoft plans upgrade for Redmond headquarters

The updated campus will house 47,000 Microsoft employees that now work at the company's headquarters in Redmond, and allow for 8,000 more people.

The new construction will add about 2.5 million sq. feet (0,23 sq. kms) of new space that will allow the company to bring 8,000 new employees on campus (the current campus occupies about 15 million sq. feet, or 1.39 sq. kms, and hosts over 47,000 employees).

The changes will replace the original X-shaped buildings where co-founder and former CEO Bill Gates moved the company in 1986, shortly before Microsoft went public. Microsoft said the new community space can fit up to 12,000 people.

Microsoft says that the massive expansion might not be completed until 2025. The project would take about five and seven years to complete. As 18 new buildings would be constructed on the Microsoft Redmond Campus, 12 older buildings would be bulldozed.

Fire in hotel on Georgia's Black Sea coast kills 11
Prime Minister Giorgi Kvirikashvili, who was returning to Georgia from Brussels, landed in Batumi and visited the scene. Twenty one people were hospitalised, mostly with carbon monoxide poisoning, and were in a stable condition, it added.

The design includes a two-acre open-air plaza, featuring running and walking trails, sports facilities and green spaces. With the added square footage, the campus' space will be the equivalent of 180 football fields. However, with the new buildings, the company plans to take a different approach. But as its ongoing search for a second headquarters highlights in no uncertain terms, the space-constrained Puget Sound region has few large undeveloped areas appropriate for an expansion that would accommodate up to 50,000 workers-the number Amazon said it may someday employ at its HQ2.

Microsoft's modern campus overhaul isn't as futuristic as the Apple Park, but the company says it's a major step forward for its culture, substantially expanding its headquarters with modern workplaces and creating 2,500 construction and development jobs in the area. The bridge will also tie into a forthcoming Link Light Rail station set to arrive in 2023. As a Zero Waste Certified campus we will continue to focus further on waste-reduction initiatives.

Microsoft announced the plans for expansion via the Microsoft blog.

It is clear that Nadella is looking to revive the work culture at Microsoft, making it a little more collaborative with employees coming out of the closed-door offices and working in a more interactive environment.
