More than 180 women have accused workers at Massage Envy of sexual assault, at least 100 women claimed that a massage therapist groped or engaged in unwanted sexually explicit behavior with them, according to a report published by BuzzFeed News.
Dozens of women have filed a complaint against Massage Envy saying they were victims of sexual assault at the hands of their therapists according to BuzzFeed. The report alleges the billion dollar spa chain and its franchisees mishandled or ignored these cases and many more.
Massage Envy therapists faced sexual harassment allegations from more than 180 women, BuzzFeed reported its investigation revealed.
"We hold franchise owners accountable to our policies and, when we say nothing is more important to us than treating clients with respect and giving them a safe, professional experience, we mean it", Hansen told Buzzfeed, according to the report.
One of those victims is Susan Ingram, who found herself being groped at her local Massage Envy in West Chester, Pennsylvania. An hour after her assault, Ingram called the Massage Envy location where it occurred. Two women reported sexual assault incidents at a Sacramento franchise, the only Northern California location cited in the investigation. Still, it said even one incident is too many, reports CBS News' Meg Oliver.
The call was reportedly taken by the manager, Nicole.
"She said in a very apparently scripted response, 'We invite you in to talk about your services.' And I said, 'No, no, no you don't understand."
"My friend told me because she knew I had a massage here".
Attorney Adam Horowitz, who has represented several accusers against Massage Envy, said it is company-wide problem.
Public records indicate Philip Proetto owns the Upper East Side franchise, but Proetto declined to comment, referring questions to Massage Envy's corporate offices, which has not provided a statement. Numerous women cited in the investigation reached out to law enforcement on their own, after they say Massage Envy failed to address their reports of assault.
