As such, a train leaving 20 seconds early could cause some commuters to miss their trains, resulting in them missing their other transfers along their destinations and snowballing into them being late for work or their appointments, Japan Today said. Shockingly, the train left at 9:43:40.

The Tsukuba Express railway connects Akihabara and Tsukuba, two towns that are about 37 miles apart, a journey that takes about 45-minutes.

Management said: "The crew did not sufficiently check the departure time and performed the departure operation".

"I'm Japanese, and even I think it's excessive to make such a big deal out of a 20-second mistake, but as an American, how do you feel about it?"

"Because Japanese trains are usually so punctual, some people plan their rail commutes so that they arrive at the platform just as the cars are pulling up", Baseel said.

The company released its heartfelt apology despite the fact that it received no customer complaints over the scheduling snafu.
