US senator Al Franken apologises after accusation of groping

In an interesting wrinkle, Franken wrote in his most recent book that it was during the 2006 USO tour - the same tour on which Tweeden says he assaulted her - that he chose to run for the Minnesota senate seat. Franken decided their characters would kiss and "mashed his lips against mine and aggressively stuck his tongue in my mouth", Tweeden writes. When he first told her they needed to rehearse the kiss, Tweeden says she laughed.

The Democrat Franken rose to fame as a comedian and writer for NBC's Saturday Night Live, and some of his quips and performances were touchy subjects well before he ran to represent Minnesota in the Senate.

Tweeden said the surge of people coming forward with their own experiences of sexual harassment or assault encouraged her to go public with her account about Franken. "Comedy is no excuse for inappropriate conduct, and I believe there should be an ethics investigation".

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) is now advocating for an ethics investigation into Franken.

In a statement Thursday, Sen.

Tweeden said she was inspired to tell her story by women members of Congress who spoke up against harassment this week. "The Ethics Committee should investigate this matter", the Oregon Democrat tweeted. "Regardless of party, harassment and assault are completely unacceptable - in the workplace or anywhere else".
