Deputies respond to reported shooting near elementary school in Rancho Tehama

At least five people are dead after a gunman opened fire at seven locations in a rural Californian town - including at a primary school.

Tehama County Assistant Sheriff Phil Johnston said that around one hundred law enforcement personnel were investigating five separate scenes relating to the incident.

The violence started with an apparent domestic dispute, according to neighbors, and spread out with the suspect "randomly picking targets", Johnston said.

Authorities said multiple shots were fired at Rancho Tehama Elementary School around 8 a.m. and there were multiple victims.

"There was an active shooter out there earlier this morning", said Jeanine Quist, an administrative assistant with the Corning Union Elementary School District.

"He said he saw bullets hit the truck in front of him, so he made his children get down and put his truck in reverse".

A witness told KCRA-TV that his truck was stolen and his roommate was shot and killed by the suspect.

NPR's Nate Rott spoke to resident Tiffany Rodgers, who knows nearly every student at the elementary school and heard the shooting from a nearby cafe.

"The insane thing is that the neighbour has been shooting a lot of bullets lately, hundreds of rounds, large magazines", Mr Flint said. "We made it (known) that this guy is insane and he's been threatening us and everything like that".
