At least 16 people died on Sunday when a tourist boat capsized in Andhra Pradesh, officials said. In the mishap, around 9 persons have been confirmed dead while 17 more are still missing. The boat with around 38 persons was heading to the Pavitra Sangamam Ferry ghat near Ibrahimpatnam. The incident took place at a spot where Krishna and Godavari river merges.
Three bodies were recovered from the river while search was on for others.
The boat's carrying capacity is 24 people. "Later, the boat was broken to extract the victims stranded under it", Commissioner of Police D. Gautam Sawang, who oversaw the rescue operations, said.
The boat was proceeding from Bhavani Islands to Pavithra Sanghamam on Sunday evening.
