The Last Jedi's Rian Johnson to create new Star Wars trilogy
Fans still have to wait a month to see Star Wars: The Last Jedi, but Lucasfilm's latest actions more or less confirm the eighth episode in the Skywalker saga is something special. Once The Force Awakens was released to financial and critical acclaim, the movie managed to rekindle the Star Wars flame, showing people that they could trust in the franchise again.
It turns out, Disney and Lucasfilm already have an ambitious new plan in place for the future of world's most beloved sci-fi franchise.
The galaxy far, far away is expanding further on screen with a new trilogy of "Star Wars" films outside of the ongoing Skywalker saga, Walt Disney Co said Thursday, to be overseen by Rian Johnson, the director of the franchise's upcoming film "The Last Jedi".
Johnson will be joined by producer, and a longtime collaborator of his, in Ram Bergman in crafting the new trilogy of new characters.
Disney said no release dates have been set for the new trilogy.
In a joint statement, the director and producer say, "We had the time of our lives collaborating with Lucasfilm and Disney on The Last Jedi".
But a new trilogy will go beyond the original nine-film framework imagined by Lucas.
We're nearly two movies into the third trilogy of the Star Wars saga but Disney is already gearing up for the next three films - and we don't mean the stand-alone ones. Kathleen Kennedy, president of Lucasfilm, referred to Johnson as a "creative force" and that watching him make "The Last Jedi" was one of her favorite moments of her storied career. The next chapter of the new trilogy, The Last Jedi, arrives this December, and J.J. Abrams is beginning pre-production on the conclusion for 2019. "But man now I REALLY hope you like The Last Jedi".
