Packers Cut TE Martellus Bennett
10 November 2017, 01:00 | Kristopher Drake
Packers' Martellus Bennett won't play vs. Bears after shoulder injury
Bennett played only seven games with the Packers after winning a Super Bowl in New England a year ago; the Bears traded him to the Packers in March 2016.
Starting tight end Martellus Bennett will be out for the game at the Chicago Bears (10 a.m. on WTMJ). By the afternoon, Bennett had been cut by the Packers. The Packers may look to add more depth at the tight end position in the near future, quite possibly from practice squad member Emmanuel Byrd.
Bennett, 30, signed a three-year, $21 million deal with Green Bay before the season after winning the Super Bowl with the Patriots. Without Bennett on Monday night against the Lions, Kendricks had two catches for 32 yards and Rodgers one catch for 5 yards. That update turned into McCarthy ruling Bennett out this week with a shoulder injury, which quickly devolved into them parting ways over Bennett's failure to disclose his medical condition.
Asked about his sudden desire to leave the game, Bennett was even more vague.
Bennett had 24 receptions for 233 yards with no touchdowns for the Packers. They gave him a $6.3 million signing bonus.
He seemed to find a comfort zone in Green Bay initially, hitting it off with quarterback Aaron Rodgers, promoting his off-the-field endeavors (children's books, smart-phone apps and artwork with the Imagination Agency), and expressing his views on politics and social issues.
"It's hard not to think anything other than that", said one player contacted after the news broke. If he does not get claimed, he becomes a free agent and can sign with any team at any time after that. "So if Marty is there, great".
