Barack Obama arrives at Chicago court to report for jury duty

Former President Obama Reports For Jury Duty

Former president Barack Obama has answered a jury summons, arriving at a Chicago courthouse to perform the civic duty asked of all Americans - but he was sent home just two hours later.

Cook County Chief Judge Timothy Evans shared with the outlet that Obama was dismissed from taking part in the jury process.

On Wednesday, Obama did get the prospective juror experience of sitting through a decades-old, 20-minute video in which Lester Holt- now the anchor of NBC Nightly News but back then on local news -explained the ins-and-outs of jury duty.

USA talk host Oprah Winfrey served as a juror on a murder trail in 2004 while Oscar-winning actor Tom Hanks sat on the benches in 2013. As happens most days, would-be jurors brought books, but on Wednesday some people brought books Obama had authored in hopes he might sign them.

Obama arrived at the justice center in Chicago by motorcade, according to several USA media reports that showed him entering the building and being greeted by people at the courthouse. If not for his presidential status, Obama would've been paid roughly $17.00 a day to be a juror.

The industry association projects that total holiday retail sales will rise as much as 4 percent this year to about $680 billion. There will also be online deals the weekend after Thanksgiving with free shipping on everything.

"The Former president was here at our invitation", Evans said.

Obama now resides in Washington D.C., but still has his Chicago home in Kenwood.

Obama, who now resides in Washington, D.C., has been active in various endeavors for his new Obama Foundation, and has also teamed with the other living former presidents in raising money for hurricane victims in Texas, Florida, and Puerto Rico.

Eventually Obama was placed on a jury panel, but when that panel wasn't needed he was allowed to go home.

"It shows us all that I don't have a good excuse and it's an important duty for all of us", first-time juror Walter Palmer told ABC Chicago affiliate WLS. In 2004, Oprah Winfrey was on a Chicago jury that convicted a man of murder.
