Twitter officially doubles the character limit to 280 for all users

08 November 2017, 12:41 | Francis Delgado

Your Twitter feed is about to get a lot more chatty with 280-character tweets

Twitter DOUBLES the length of tweets to 280 characters so you don't have to cram everything in 140 characters

After several weeks of Twitter users tweeting about how much they hate the idea of expanded character limits, Twitter has officially announced that it's doubling the previous 140-character limit for all users.

Users had also anxious that longer tweets would exacerbate Twitter's ongoing problem with harassment - more characters might mean more scope for abuse.

One of the USPs of the service was the brevity that it enforced on users. Others just want an edit button already.

Twitter first experimented with allowing longer tweets in September.

Interestingly, Twitter said that after the novelty of tweeting more characters wore off, most people in the test stopped tweeting the full length.

It says historically, 9% of Tweets in English hit the character limit, reflecting "the challenge of fitting a thought into a tweet".

Target Releases Black Friday Ad, Offers Early Access Deals
The industry association projects that total holiday retail sales will rise as much as 4 percent this year to about $680 billion. There will also be online deals the weekend after Thanksgiving with free shipping on everything.

At present, the character-limitation encourages "threads", where multiple tweets are linked to form the equivalent of a blog post. That's all well and good, but what's the damn point of expanding the character limit if only 5% of tweets are taking advantage of it? This means people probably spent time editing down their tweets or not sending them out at all.

The roll-out includes all languages except Japanese, Korean and Chinese. But Ms Rosen said that increasing the character count shouldn't affect people's experience on Twitter.

In addition to more Tweeting, people who had more room to Tweet received more engagement (Likes, Retweets, @mentions), got more followers, and spent more time on Twitter.

But, Twitter said, while obnoxiously long messages weren't flooding users' timelines, the more verbose tweets did let people fire off messages faster and, the company believes, with less agonizing over each message.

Of course, the change means America's highest-profile Twitter user, President Trump, will have more space.

It's worth emphasizing again that people in the test got very excited about the extra space in the beginning and many Tweets went way beyond 140.
