StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty going free-to-play; Details

Starcraft 2 will go free-to-play later this month

Well, you're finally out of excuses, as Blizzard has announced their venerable real-time strategy game will be going free-to-play later this month.

On top of all this, you'll be able to play Co-Op Commanders - current and upcoming - for free up to level five, with the weekly mutation level restriction removed.

Experience the original epic campaign that kicked off the StarCraft II saga!

Access to ranked ladder granted after earning first 10 wins of the day in Unranked mode or Versus A.I. mode, or upon purchase of any campaign, the Campaign Collection, or the War Chest. You have to log in between November 8 and December 8 to claim that upgrade though.

Wings of Liberty received an excellent rating in PCMag's 2010 review, nabbing props for its "wonderful story and character development", "great soundtrack", and "lasting appeal".

Battle.net has been redesigned from the ground up to be the premier online gaming destination for Blizzard gamers, with several enhancements and new features, such as voice communication, cloud file storage, leagues and ladders, achievements, stat-tracking, and more. "As the Zerg finally spring their attack, Jim Raynor and company must deal with Dominion forces, Zerg infestations, and Protoss (a psionic race of humanoid alien) relations".

During his annual address to the community at BlizzCon, Mike Morhaime, the president of Blizzard Entertainment, announced that large portions of the real-time strategy game would be made available free of charge. The multiplayer mode will enable gamers from around the world to compete against each other.

Nonetheless, if you end up enjoying Wings of Liberty so much that you'll end up craving the other content options, Blizzard will sell you any one of the three individual expansions (Heart of the Swarm, Legacy of the Void, or Nova Covert Ops) for $14.99 each.

For those of use that already own StarCraft II or any version, we'll be getting a special Eidolon Ghost skin and three portraits commemorating our founder's status.
