Trump: We will 'step up' vetting of immigrants after NYC attack

New York attack : President Trump orders extreme vetting of travellers

Tuesday afternoon, a truck authorities believe was driven by a 29-year-old man with a diversity visa plowed into a bike path, killing eight and injuring 11.

According to witnesses of the incident, the attacker yelled "Allahu Akbar" ("God is great") when he came out of the pickup truck he was driving after it crashed into a school bus after he had run over dozens of people.

Reports state that Sayfullo Habibullaevic Saipov, an Uzbek national who legally resided in Florida and New Jersey, is suspected to be behind the attack where he ploughed through pedestrians and bicyclists in lower Manhattan using a rented Home Depot truck.

Prior to a meeting with his Cabinet Wednesday around noon - about 18 hours after the attack - Trump proposes action be taken on the diversity lottery program - the means by which the alleged attacker made it into the US.

Prior to his tweet surrounding the initiative, Trump attacked ISIS by stating that the U.S. should not open its borders to terrorism.

ISIS supporters have been praising the deadly truck rampage in NY which killed eight people yesterday as law enforcement sources revealed the suspect left behind handwritten notes pledging loyalty to the terror group.

Monster Hunter World beta dates detailed by Capcom

He has also spoken out against the Democrats, blaming them for allowing people like Saipov to enter the country and orchestrate terrorist attacks, totally undetected. "Enough!" he said in another tweet. "And no wonder so much of this stuff takes place".

NY police said the suspect, who police shot and detained at the scene, used a rented van to mow down pedestrians and cyclists on a bike path near where the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center once stood.

The president was briefed on the incident by White House chief of staff John Kelly.

When 58 Americans were killed last month by a white gunman in Las Vegas with no apparent ties to Islamist terrorism, the White House rejected a policy debate on gun control as inappropriate in the days following the tragedy.

The department is closely monitoring the situation and working with federal, state and local partners in responding to and investigating this tragedy.

The suspect was armed with two weapons and began running before being shot by police. "Based on the information we have at this moment, this was an act of terror, and a particularly cowardly act of terror aimed at innocent civilians...who had no idea what was about to hit them".
