Tehran skips UN conference on nuclear energy in UAE

UN conference on nuclear energy begins in UAE

As the Trump administration continues to jeopardize the deal, the United Nations nuclear watchdog reiterated Sunday that Iran is complying with its commitments made in the 2015 nuclear accord.

This month, US President Donald Trump said a "total termination" of the deal remained possible, after refusing to certify the accord and leaving its fate to the US Congress.

Yukiya Amano, the head of the International Atomic Energy Agency, avoided speaking about Iran in his address at the conference.

Trump has stopped short of withdrawing the United States from an global accord signed with Iran in 2015, which seeks to ensure that Tehran would place limitations on its nuclear program in exchange for the removal of some sanctions.

Wisconsin man spends night drinking convenience store's beer cooler
When he went into the store's cooler to retrieve his beverage of choice, the cooler door closed behind him, locking him in. A Wisconsin man who was under court order not to drink alcohol found himself locked inside a beer cooler after hours.

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani ordered in December 2016 the development of a nuclear-propulsion system for vessels in response to USA sanctions against Iran.

Under the terms of the deal, known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action or JCPOA, Tehran agreed to curb certain nuclear activities in exchange for a lifting of sanctions.

"As of today, I can state that the nuclear-related commitments made by Iran under the JCPOA (nuclear deal) are being implemented", Yukiya Amano, the head of the International Atomic Energy Agency, said at a Tehran press conference broadcast by state television.

"It is the decision of Iran to accept restrictions in return to remove sanctions, but if these sanctions return with other excuses, it will change decision to get out of the meaningless deal", he said, according to the Iranian news agency Mehr. It includes a ban on high-level uranium enrichment - 20 percent or more - that would take Iran close to the level needed for a nuclear weapon. "But we don't want that", he said.
