Staff at the store also say the man toppled and damaged three 30-packs of beer. Gramza said Van Ert was put in the Wood County Jail on a probation hold from an unrelated case. When he went into the store's cooler to retrieve his beverage of choice, the cooler door closed behind him, locking him in.
Gramza said in his 20 years in the police field, he hasn't seen anything like this.
The probation hold requires him to be sober.
Kwik Trip officials told police they will review their security.
