Street sign hit by child in stolen car
A man dialed 911 after he saw a 2004 Toyota Avalon swerving across Interstate 90 west. Westlake police officers spotted a speeding auto being chased by another vehicle, possible driven by the boy's mother.
This time around, he took his dad's Toyota Avalon 50 miles to Sandusky, at times reaching 100 miles an hour on the turnpike.
The pursuit ended when a trooper nudged the auto into a sign.
The pursuit started around 8:30 a.m. on Thursday when the 10-year-old child was supposed to be waiting for his older sister to take him to school. The boy was unharmed during the chase. Police said he only stopped during that incident because the vehicle got three flat tires. "Motioned for him to pull over and the child shook his head and said "no" and continued driving", the officer said.
"When we were able to get him out of the vehicle he was very agitated".
"I told him, he could've hurt somebody, he could've hurt himself, or he could've been killed, he could've killed somebody else ... and you knew you were wrong".
When the boy wouldn't pull over, Westlake police pursued him for more than 15 miles through two counties. "He kicked one of the troopers in the shin, he then spit in the face of the same trooper", Ohio State Highway Patrol trooper Richard Reeder said.
His mother arrived at the scene shortly after the crash.
Police say it all started when the 10-year-old took the family's auto from his home on in Cleveland Thursday morning. "You could have got killed".
The boy was found driving with three flat tires in the high-speed lane on I-90 eastbound near West 117th Street.
"One vehicle as gently as possible", another answered.
A Cleveland police report shows that the boy previously stole his mother's 2013 Dodge Charger on October 16.
