Record Support for Legalizing Marijuana in the United States

26 October 2017, 01:05 | Franklin Nunez

Marijuana will be legal in Canada by July 1

Marijuana TMX Meetings

The survey asked over 1,000 people around the country if marijuana use should be legal or not; 64 percent approved of legalization, 34 percent opposed it, and 2 percent had no opinion.

According to a new poll released by Gallup, for the first time ever the majority of Republican voters support marijuana legalization.

The survey says that for the first time, 51% Republicans support legalization while 72% of Democrats and 67% of Independents are in support.

However, support for legalization among independents actually fell by three percentage points since a year ago, when 70% indicated they were in favor of legalization. While still illegal at the federal level, the issue was featured on a number of state ballot initiatives in 2016, and with eight states and the District of Columbia having fully legalized marijuana, more than one in five Americans live in a state where they can legally enjoy use of the drug.

Du Plessis injury dampens Proteas parade
There is no rush for du Plessis to return to action with South Africa's global calendar blank until Boxing Day. Bangladesh lost three wickets inside the first six overs and was bowled out for 169 in 40.4 overs.

California became the first state to legalize medical marijuana in 1996, paving the way for 28 other states and the nation's capital to follow suit.

Support for marijuana legalization has been rising steadily over the years so it's not all that surprising to some that numbers have reached this level. Previous year support was 28 points, or 67 percent, higher among Democrats.

Of course, we're all ignoring the more interesting point here - that, between 2016 and 2017, Republicans polled by Gallup on legalizing marijuana jumped "up nine percentage points". While it's true that this increase in support for legalization has not led to the same rapid changes in the law we saw when it came to marriage equality, much of that can be attributed to the differences in how those laws can be changed.

"Marijuana legalization is far more popular than Jeff Sessions or Donald Trump and will survive them both", Maria McFarland Sánchez-Moreno, executive director of the Drug Policy Alliance, said in a statement. Sessions could have an uphill battle in shoring up support for his anti-marijuana crusade if he cannot even count on his own party. In 2010 Democrats were nearly twice as likely as Republicans to favor legalization. "This is a clear mandate for the legislature to enact sensible marijuana laws to help the state create a workable budget".
