Summary: Dehradun: The visit of PM Narendra Modi to Kedarnath on Friday came under sharp criticism from the state Congress, with the opposition party accusing the BJP of taking credit for projects started by the Harish Rawat government.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister, who had also visited the temple in May, laid foundation stones of five reconstruction projects at Kedarpuri, which include facilities for devotees, construction of retaining walls and ghats at Mandakini and Saraswati rivers, an approach road to the shrine and reconstructing Adi Guru Shankaracharya's tomb which was devastated in 2013. PM Modi was welcomed by Uttarakhand Governor K K Paul, Chief Minister Trivendra Singh Rawat and other officials at the airport before he headed for the Himalayan shrine.

In 2013, I was not the Prime Minister, but the Chief Minister of Gujarat. The Prime Minister also laid foundation stones of several redevelopment projects in the temple town which suffered extensive damage 2013 flash flood.

He said, in the last 22 years, BJP governments brought all round development in Gujarat and the identity of the state is known for its development.

The party claimed that the visit had been planned with Gujarat elections in mind and reflected Modi's "arrogance" as he had addressed a gathering there with his back towards Lord Shiva's shrine "while donning Italian glasses". During the meeting they agreed.

However, the reconstruction plan did not materialise and today, PM Narendra Modi accused the then Congress government of Uttarakhand and the UPA at the Centre for rejecting his reconstruction proposal. In my excitement I shared the development with the media and within an hour TV channels flashed it, causing a storm in New Delhi.

"I had expressed my desire to carry out reconstruction work at Kedarnath to the then chief minister, who agreed in principle", Mr Modi said.

Slamming the tactics used by Congress to stop him from laying a helping hand to the shrine which badly needed to be revamped after the floods wreaked havoc on it, Modi said, "I came here to do all that I could for the victims".
