Facebook Is Trying To Expand Into A Purveyor Of Positivity

An example of tbh's polls. Tbh

Tbh app

A relatively unknown name in this part of the globe, tbh has been in existence for only a few months in the west on iOS and has garnered 5 million downloads for its primary feature - the ability to send honest compliments to friends anonymously.

The app, which is available on iOS devices, has been around only since August, in some states, but its popularity has ballooned. Now Facebook is buying the app and Facebook is permitting the app to run as it did before, which is parallel to how other social networking apps worked. It's the No. 1 free app on the iTunes charts - ahead of YouTube, Snapchat and Instragram.

As per the reports, Facebook has paid under $100 million for the startup app. That means they won't have their own building and email addresses, which is in contrast with the situation of teams for other Facebook-owned entities such as Instagram and WhatsApp. Users are alerted every time someone picks them in a poll, and each vote earns them a gem that functions as a sort of in-app currency to unlock new questions. A user is notified if they are selected as who "does the most ..." or is "the biggest underdog", and the user who made the choice is kept anonymous.

Behold! The Oculus Go - a standalone VR headset that costs $199
If you're interested but still not sure you want to invest in a headset, there was some other good news from Oculus Connect . Barra announced that the company had developed custom lenses for the headset, which allow for a wide field of view.

Perhaps most clearly, TBH is yet another channel where Facebook can command the time and attention of young people. The company is very impressed with tbh as it is doing the same through polling and messaging, using Facebook's resources tbh can expand and build positive experiences, according to Facebook. The acquisition also eliminates a nascent competitor.

"When we met with Facebook, we realized that we shared numerous same core values about connecting people through positive interactions", the tbh team said in a statement. TBH believes that it holds similar values to Facebook and is hopeful that the acquisition will help to bring its message to more people.
