While the existing Oculus Rift (the price of which was lowered from $499 to $399 during the same conference) targets more of a high-end PC-gaming crowd that prizes performance over convenience, Facebook hopes that the Oculus Go will find the "sweet spot" between the Rift and current competitors like the Samsung Gear that are powered (and limited) by a user's smartphone.
If you're interested but still not sure you want to invest in a headset, there was some other good news from Oculus Connect.
But is Oculus Go the affordable answer virtual reality has been waiting for?
"This all-in-one device makes VR more accessible than ever and represents a huge leap forward in comfort, visual clarity, and ease-of-use", added Oculus in a blogpost.
ARKTIKA.1's current price is $29.99 Dollars (or your regional equivalent) and is available now for the Oculus Rift.
Oculus has shared minimal hardware details about the Oculus Go at this point. Created to rival mobile-powered devices such as Gear VR, Oculus Go will feature a "fast switch" WQHD 2560 x 1440 LCD screen as well as support for spatial audio.
Barra announced that the company had developed custom lenses for the headset, which allow for a wide field of view.
This all should equal sharper visuals on Go, but of what, exactly?
The tech world will be watching to see if the Oculus Go can become the next smash hit like the iPhone ... or if VR is a flash in the pan like 3D TVs.
Importantly, the Oculus Go uses the same controller input set as the Gear VR and Oculus Go.
The new headset is made of a new breathable cloth, for improved comfort, and the Go can be used with glasses. The headset, which is due to arrive in early 2018, will be cross-compatible with titles designed for Samsung's VR platform and will ship to developers next month.
Where my eyes turn to is the Project Santa Cruz headset, which will undoubtedly be more expensive than Go and maybe even Rift, but looks to offer an analogous experience to Rift, without a tether.
For anyone thinking of investing in VR just for the new Respawn game, you should hold your virtual horses - there's bound to be newer versions of the headset by the time the game is released in 2019.
