Meanwhile, Zuckerberg has offered a couple of mea culpas and has turned over thousands of Russian-linked Facebook ads to Special Counsel Robert Mueller.
- 44% of the ads were seen before the USA election on November 8, 2016; 56% were seen after the election. It's also been said the content of the ads - along with their landing pagers - were blatantly false in many cases. None of the companies has yet said whether it will accept the invitations. The company said it found 450 accounts and about $100,000 was spent on the ads. Investigation into President Donald Trump's alleged ties to Russian Federation has uncovered crucial information about social media's role in swaying public opinion about the presidential candidates, and Facebook was revealed to have played a huge part in it.
Facebook earlier handed over the details to Special Counsel Robert Mueller, who is now investigating claims of alleged Russian meddling in the election, included copies of the ads and details about the accounts that bought them and the targeting criteria they used.
The social media giant said Monday it will add more than 1,000 people to review the ads that run on its platforms.
Senate intelligence chairman Richard Burr said Monday he won't be the one who makes the Russian-linked Facebook election ads public.
Meanwhile, Facebook will hand over detailed records of the ads to Congress on Monday, including the Senate and House Intelligence committees and both Judiciary committees.
The tools developed by Facebook and other American companies in recent years have given advertisers unprecedented power to identify people susceptible to their messages and to repeatedly deliver targeted advertisements to them over weeks or months as they browse the Internet.
Congressional investigators learned Monday that one of the Russian-bought advertisements on Facebook featured a picture of a black woman armed with a rifle and pulling the trigger without having a bullet in the chamber.
Facebook said the ads addressed social and political issues and ran in the United States between 2015 and 2017. "That's not what we stand for".
The committee expects Facebook, along with Twitter and Google, to send representatives to testify at the hearing. And that going forward the company would expand policies to prevent ads that express violence even in subtle ways.
"I care deeply about the democratic process and protecting its integrity", Zuckerberg said earlier this month.
Russian Federation has denied US intelligence agencies' reports that it interfered in the election.
Donald Trump barely squeaked by with an electoral college win, and with these Facebook numbers, it's becoming increasingly clear that he only did that with the help of the Russians posting fake news on Facebook.
