Man with Islamic State flag plows car, U-Haul van into Canadian cop and pedestrians during rampage

Police confirm that a black and white flag for the terrorist group was found in a Chevy Malibu used to slam through police barricade outside the Commonwealth Stadium around 8 p.m.in Edmonton.

Chief Rod Knecht say they are investigating the incident using section 83.2 of the Criminal Code of Canada.

The suspect peeled out with dozens of police cars in pursuit.

Later, the same suspect was pulled over at a police check stop on Wayne Gretzky Drive, this time driving the U-Haul.

The suspect then fled the scene on foot and managed to escape police. Four people were injured - the extent of their injuries was not immediately known.

Chief Knecht said information about the vehicle's registered owner was broadcast to patrol officers.

Police said the van intentionally swerved at pedestrians at crosswalks throughout the chase.

Police said the suspect, who authorities have not identified, was arrested several hours later following a vehicle chase across a busy downtown street during which he intentionally sought to hit pedestrians. The RCMP and the Edmonton Police Service, through the Integrated National Enforcement Team, are working closely together to bring those involved to justice.

The police officer's condition is described as "not critical". Pictures in the Canadian media showed the U-Haul on its side with the front window shattered.

Austin Elgie, manager of The Pint bar just west of the downtown core, saw the van zoom by with police giving chase.

He says the truck hit two pedestrians and disappeared.

Austin Elgie, manager of The Pint bar just west of the downtown core, said the truck hit a person in the alley outside his establishment.

Knecht addressed those concerns at his news conference, saying the seriousness of the crime dictated why the chase continued.

USA national security agencies strongly lean toward the conclusion that the suspect acted alone, though they are still reviewing the matter, a US official told Reuters.

The incidents, which occurred late on Saturday night, left one policeman and four civilians injured. "We are urging all Edmontonians to be vigilant and aware of their surroundings".
