Both players were dropped from the England team after footage emerged in which a man resembling Stokes could be seen repeatedly punching another man.

Stokes was arrested on suspicion of causing actual bodily harm and then released without charge under investigation on Monday, and Hales was with him at the time of the incident.

"Each remains on full pay pending further European Central Bank investigation and the ongoing police investigation into an incident in Bristol in the early hours of Monday 25 September".

The Test vice-captain was included in the Ashes squad despite reportedly injuring his hand in the incident that led to his arrest but there are doubts around whether he will be on the plane to Australia.

The Sun newspaper published footage of what it said was a brawl between the player and two other people, one clutching a bottle.

England ODI regular Alex Hales - an Ashes long-shot who did not make the Test squad - was also left out of Wednesday's match after being with Stokes on Sunday night.

As part of the ECB's internal disciplinary process, Stokes and Hales have been suspended on full pay pending further investigation, both by the European Central Bank and the police, with Strauss referring the matter to the Cricket Discipline Commission, chaired by Tim O'Gorman. However, the Durham all-rounder was included in the squad for the Ashes but his participation in the highly anticipated series down under due to the pending police enquiry and European Central Bank clearance.

"I genuinely can't wait", he said.

But no timeframe has been given on their potential availability, with England due to play their first Test against Australia in Brisbane on 23 November.

England all-rounder Ben Stokes has been making the headlines for the wrong reasons.

"Our enquiries into the disorder in the Queens Road/Clifton Triangle area of Bristol in the early hours of Monday are continuing", read the police statement.

The allrounder has been in superb form in the previous year and a half driving England's home success. I'm going to have to change a couple of things.

"I never, ever thought I'd be on a tour like this so to be going I'm very, very fortunate and I know that hopefully we'll go out there and perform and win the Ashes". "I'm 26, not 14".
