EXPLAINER: What is DACA?
Since Trump made his decision to phase out DACA, at least a couple of local organizations and institutions have vowed to help dreamers in any way they can.
In comments that angered Trump's conservative political base, White House officials said Trump would not necessarily insist on funding for a wall on the U.S. -Mexico border as a condition for helping the Dreamers.
Individuals brought to the United States under age 16, who have lived here since 2012 and were under 31 at that time, who have achieved a high school diploma or equivalent and who are pursuing higher education, have held a job or have served in the military would be able to apply for permits for successive five-year periods, after which they could pursue legal permanent residency and eventually citizenship. Applicants must also have had a clean criminal record and be enrolled in high school, college, or the military. There will also be 70 scholarships available to help pay for the application fee. "There have been other immigration policies over the years that are a part of our immigrations laws that protect people from other countries, so this wouldn't be something that's out of the ordinary". "If their parents are already here, their parents have to return to their home country for 10 years before they can apply, because if they've been in this country for more than a year their ineligible to be able to have a quick citizenship connection". Businesses throughout our nation are depending on our Congress to approve legislation this fall that will provide these young people raised in our country a permanent solution.
If there's one thing I know about this program, it's that its recipients are extremely hard-working and have a desire to thrive in our country.
Congress has yet to come up with a solution to this, so thousands of DACA recipients are anxious about the possibility of deportation. I think the government should take this into consideration and reevaluate their decision. These people aren't doing anything wrong.
They overstayed the temporary terms of the visa and continued living in the U.S.as undocumented immigrants.
Ending DACA and deporting thousands who benefit from it is counterproductive.
Gaytan said he hopes to go on to become a professor or immigration lawyer after graduation but knows he'll need a work permit to do so. Top Senate Democrat Chuck Schumer and top House of Representatives Democrat Nancy Pelosi have said that in a meeting with Trump they had discussed a path to citizenship for Dreamers after eight years. The program aims at assisting children whose parents brought them to the USA without documentation while receiving workers permits. The Republican House is also using President Trump's anti-immigration rhetoric as a golden opportunity for re-election in 2018.
This proposal addresses some immigration hardliners' concerns by not allowing those in the program to sponsor family members to come to the United States. That's what everyone wants.
At the end of the day, it is important to realize that these immigrants and these deferred individuals are in fact real people, not numbers. It quotes a Democratic staffer saying "there is bipartisan opposition to many of them", and quotes a business lobbyist saying the "agenda to try to attach 50 percent cuts to legal immigration and other provisions completely undermines the president's desire and chances for any deal". Support for this legislation crosses party lines and includes most voters and institutions like faith and business sectors.
Growing up with undocumented family members has shown me this isn't something we can ignore.
"Immigration is a hard issue, but I'm convinced there's a path forward on this, and I'm committed to working with my colleagues on both sides of the aisle to find that path and to enact meaningful reform, which must also include increased border security", he said.
I am not a DACA recipient, but I will continue to write and speak out about this until something is done, and you should too. It's about being a decent human being - something our president and his administration seem to have zero idea about.
