NFL Week 3 sees boost in TV ratings
27 September 2017, 12:52 | Clyde Nash
The 2017 figures don't include this week's Monday night game between the Dallas Cowboys and Arizona Cardinals.
For whatever reasons people choose to attribute to the NFL's ratings stumble, now more than a year old and something that will surely continue this season, it is not a problem that can really be diagnosed over a single weekend - let alone one game.
The drop in ratings comes after amid a growing dispute between the NFL and President Donald Trump regarding players refusing to stand for the playing of the national anthem. Overnight ratings for its singleheader slate of games were down 16% compared to last year's week 3 numbers. Additionally, CBS' NFL Today pregame show scored its highest rating since 2010. Nielsen said Hannity had 3.27 million viewers on Monday, compared to 2.66 million for Maddow.
There is a lot of crowing about the year-to-year comparison which sees MNF surging 63% in the early numbers over last year. But it's not unreasonable to assume that the lack of a debate accounts for most of, if not all, of the overall 3 percent increase in ratings for Week 3.
The President telling those who attended a rally on Friday in Huntsville, AL that those National Football League players who kneeled in protest to the treatment of African-Americans should be fired. With attention on players kneeling during the national anthem, it's led the NFL's media partners to air the various renditions from each stadium as this has become a huge national story.
That wasn't the case this past Sunday, as the growing protest of players to President Trump's tweets made the anthem newsworthy. The protests spread rapidly this past weekend following the president's criticism of people involved.
For football fans, though, chances are they were attracted by better games.
The worst Sunday Night Football has performed this season so far, that's an 8% dip from the early numbers of last week's Atlanta Falcon's 34-23 win over the Green Bay Packers.
