Violent crime rising throughout US, FBI says
As the Brennan Center for Justice found in a preliminary analysis of the data, Chicago accounted for 20 percent of the overall increase in murders past year.
"So in other words, five neighborhoods in Chicago explain 10 percent of the national increase in homicide rates", said John Pfaff, a law professor at Fordham University in New York City. "And we must do it together", Attorney General Jeff Sessions said.
"We vigorously refute the FBI's numbers", Craig said from outside a barricaded gunman scene in southwest Detroit Monday afternoon.
Sessions said the country needed to "dismantle criminal organizations and gangs, stop the scourge of drug trafficking, and send a strong message to criminals that we will not surrender our communities to lawlessness and violence".
The city's property crime drop in 2016 was driven by a 17 percent decline in burglaries.
Experts, however, called into question whether the increases for 2015 and 2016 would be part of any longer-term trend. "They know it, and the response we got last year and this year: 'Well, it's past the deadline'".
Reports of violent crime increased in Niagara County by 9 percent, where the overall crime rate also grew by 4 percent, according to the News' analysis. However, he added that about half of the rise in murders in Chicago took place in just five neighborhoods. Drilling down further: the number of murders in MI was up 13 to 598. Fox said it was not surprising that violence might increase after many years of success in reducing murders.
Since the early 1990s, as the United States population has grown, murders have dropped to about 14,000 a year.

Murders and non-negligent manslaughters decreased 33 percent in CT from 2015 to 2016, but the state saw a slight uptick in overall violent crime.
There were 78 murders and non-negligent manslaughters in CT in 2016, down from 116 the year before.
In Michigan the stats show an increase in violent crimes of just over 9 percent to more than 45,000 violent crimes previous year.
Sessions has tied the increase in violent crime to "undermined" respect for police officers and, in a recent speech, connected Chicago's crime rates to the city's policies on undocumented immigrants, a contention disputed by the police there.
Note: The FBI specifically advises against using its data to create rankings.
State-to-state comparisons are fairer and the differences are stark.
The Trump administration seized on the data as proof of the legitimacy of its tough-on-crime agenda. Human error in the entering of reports plays a role, but the crime designation often changes as the investigation evolves. Of 8.4 million arrests, 69.6% were of white individuals and 27% were black or African American.
