St. Louis: Protesters Expected To Reconvene For 3rd Day
Rock giants U2 and pop star Ed Sheeran have called off concerts in St Louis, as the United States city braced itself on Sunday (Sept 17) for a second day of protests over the acquittal of a former police officer in the shooting death of a black man. The demonstrations are expected to continue on Saturday, September 16. The promoter was also informed that the local crowd security personnel would not be at full capacity.
After Friday's ruling, some 600 chanting protesters marched from the courthouse through downtown St. Louis, some of them holding "Black Lives Matter" signs.
"In light of this information, we can not in good conscience risk our fans' safety by proceeding with tonight's concert", the statement read. U2 was supposed to perform at The Dome at America's Center on Saturday. "Although we do so with regret, the cancellation is according to us the only acceptable outcome in the current environment".
After Stockley was acquitted on Friday, sporadic violence resulted in almost three-dozen people arrested and 11 police officers injured, including a broken jaw and dislocated shoulder, police said.

US Urges Kurds to Call Off Independence Vote Lawmaker Omed Khoshnaw from the Kurdistan Democratic Party called the referendum a "message of peace" to Baghdad and neighbours. Kirkuk is home to sizeable Arab and Turkmen populations and lies outside the official boundaries of the Kurdistan region.
Protesters said Sunday that the six-minute silence symbolizes the six years between the death of Anthony Lamar Smith and the acquittal of the white former police officer who was charged in the black suspect's shooting death.
Prosecutors said Stockley planted a gun in Smith's auto after the shooting.
Protests turned violent for a second night late Saturday, as a small group of demonstrators refused to disperse, breaking windows at dozens of businesses and throwing objects at police, who moved in with hundreds of officers in riot gear to make arrests.
The case has drawn a lot of attention in St Louis, where racial tensions have been high since the 2014 killing of a black man in the city's suburb of Ferguson by a white police officer.
