Crane Collapses As Hurricane Irma Hits Downtown Miami

Construction cranes collapse in downtown Miami

Huge construction cranes loom over Miami as Irma threatens

The first crane fell in a bay-front area filled with hotels and high-rise condo and office buildings, near the AmericanAirlines Arena, where the NBA's Miami Heat play.

City manager Daniel Alfonso says officials knew Irma could be a serious threat with about a week's notice, and that wasn't enough time to take all the cranes down.

"I know it was very hard to bring down in two weeks", Ape said. Irma is now a Category 4 storm, but it's bringing maximum sustained winds of 150 miles per hour - and gusts of more than 180 miles per hour - as it churns toward Florida's coast.

Southwestern coastal cities from Cape Sable and Captiva could see walls of water up to 15 feet, the National Hurricane Center said.

"We're telling people that if you live by a construction site you should evacuate", said Alyce Robertson, executive director of the Miami Downtown Development Authority.

Officials urged people in buildings facing the crane to seek shelter on the opposite side of the building or in a stairwell.

Manchester City threaten legal action against Tebas
Manchester City say they are taking legal advice over the La Liga president's "ill-informed" criticism of their transfer spending. La Liga president Javier Tebas has challenged UEFA to carry out investigations over PSG and Manchester City's transfer dealings.

The same videos showed his tower cranes spinning in the background.

"If we get a direct hit, the widespread damage is not going to be done by a crane failure", Whiteman said.

Only a few contractors are certified to remove those cranes, he said.

According to the resident, the crane is on top of the PMG building that is now under construction.

The horizontal arms of some cranes were left loose to spin in the winds.

The major exception, Whiteman said, is if a tornado forms, which "virtually nothing" would be able to withstand.
