Anderson advances to his first Grand Slam semifinal at age 31

Spain's Pablo Carreno Busta cruised into his first Grand Slam semi-final and American Sloane Stephens matched her best Slam showing by reaching the last four yesterday at the US Open.

Carreno Busta, the first player to face four qualifiers in any Grand Slam, advanced to last four with a straight-forward 6-4 6-4 6-2 victory over the diminutive Schwartzman.

Carreno Busta will face the victor of Tuesday's night match in NY between Wimbledon semi-finalist and 17th seed Sam Querrey and another big server in the 28th seeded Kevin Anderson of South Africa.

But Querrey wouldn't win another point, with Anderson reeling off the last three to end the match after almost 3½ hours.

He'll take on Pablo Carreno Busta on Tuesday.

Querrey saved a first match point with an ace at 6-5, set up a set point at 7-6, which Anderson staved off by forcing his opponent to slice a backhand into the net.

But the stands gradually cleared up as the match was sent deep into the night.

And he wanted to make sure he could one day fill his boots for the Dragons and not slip away back across the border. That said, Moldova had come close to a rare victory in the two games preceding their match with Serbia .

"I just told myself to keep fighting and stay consistent", Stephens said.

With a first-time grand slam finalist guaranteed to emerge from the wide open draw, Carreno Busta prevailed 7-6 (7-2) 7-6 (7-4) 7-6 (7-3) over the 2016 Wimbledon junior champion. Querrey, a 29-year-old American seeded 17th, made his major semi-final debut in July at Wimbledon.

Venus Williams is trying to reach the U.S. Open semifinals for the first time since 2010. "It's something that I always dreamed about but something I never thought was going to arrive here".

Momentum swung firmly in Carreno Busta's favour at 3-4 in the second set after the Spaniard fell behind 0-40.

Stephens hopes to match her best Slam run to the 2013 Australian Open semis while Sevastova has matched her best Slam run from a year ago in NY.

Carreno Busta also reached the quarters at the French Open in June, but had to retire from his match against eventual champion Rafael Nadal because of an abdominal injury that forced him to miss Wimbledon.

Schartzman, at 5ft 7in (1.70m), was the shortest Slam quarter-finalist since same-height Peruvian Jaime Yzaga at the 1994 US Open.
