Red Sox Used Apple Watches to Steal Yankee Signs

Red Sox Used Apple Watches to Steal Yankee Signs

According to reports, the Red Sox admitted to using an Apple Watch to steal the Yankees' signals.

The Boston Red Sox, now first place in their division, used an Apple Watch to steal signs from opponents' catchers, including on the second place New York Yankees and other teams, according to a Major League Baseball investigation.

According to the report in the New York Times, a Red Sox video replay personnel member would pick up the catcher's signs from the video feed, determine the sequencing when a runner was on second base and relay that information to a team trainer, who was wearing an Apple Watch. However, the Red Sox also filed a countercomplaint with the league, accusing the Bronx Bombers of also stealing hand signals, but instead of Apple Watches, using their television network YES as the conduit.

MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred, in a news conference, says he takes both allegations "extremely seriously" and says the league "will conduct a thorough investigation of the charges on both sides". With multiple pieces of evidence in their possession, the league went directly to the Red Sox to present the case.

Clever, clever. It's notable the matter became public the same day that the Sox filed a counter-complaint about the Yankees: for using a TV camera to steal signs. "I don't think this is what video is meant for, so teams can use it to their advantage".

How were the Red Sox stealing signs?

As for penalties, the Times notes that old-school sign stealing is not against the rules, but using binoculars or other devices (presumably including Apple Watches) is a violation.

Merkel Backs Mattis Against Trump in Call for North Korea Talks
That gave Mr Schulz, who has repeatedly accused Mrs Merkel of dodging the issues, the chance to pin his opponent down. But Merkel countered that: "In the life of a chancellor, there comes a time when you have to make a quick decision".

"It's always been a game within a game, but the use of electronics takes it too far", Yankees outfielder Brett Gardner told reporters on Tuesday.

The only punishment in the past for one team suspecting another of stealing signs has been an opposing hitter getting beaned with a pitch.

Christian Vazquez of the Boston Red Sox slides safely into home as the throw bounces off the helmet of Austin Romine of the New York Yankees during a game at Fenway Park on August 18, 2017 in Boston.

"The Red Sox have been 100 percent fully cooperative with us in the investigation", Manfred said.

How does sign stealing work? With only a month left in baseball's regular season, the Red Sox cling to a slim lead over the Yankees in the AL East.

The video provided to the commissioner's office by the Yankees was captured during the first two games of the series and included at least three clips.
