German authorities prepare to dispose of WW2 bomb

Police set up cordons around the evacuation area, which covered a radius of 1.5 kilometres.

In May, more than 50,000 people were asked to leave Hanover after a bomb was discovered during pre-construction work on a site in the Vahrenwald district.

The bomb was found during work Tuesday close to the Goethe University Frankfurt compound, police said in a statement.

Around 21,000 people had to leave the area in Koblenz as the 500-kilogramme (1,100-pound) bomb was successfully defused, before the fire brigade allowed residents to return to their homes.

"There're still people surfacing, and they need to be brought out of the evacuation zone", said a spokesman for Frankfurt's firefighting service, adding that this process was "incredibly annoying and time-consuming".

On Saturday, authorities in the German financial capital began evacuating patients from two hospitals.

In Frankfurt, bomb disposal experts will use a special system to try and unscrew the fuses attached to the HC 4,000 bomb from a safe distance.

The bomb was dropped by Britain's Royal Air Force during the 1939-45 war, city officials said. Officials estimate 15 percent of the bombs failed to explode, some burrowing 6m deep.

In July, a kindergarten was evacuated after teachers discovered an unexploded Second World War bomb on a shelf among some toys.

And, although it's not unusual for live bombs and munition to be uncovered in Germany - 2,000 tonnes are found each year, even under buildings - it's rare for them to be so large and found in such a sensitive position.
